My son is 8 and he loves Legos. He is very used to following the Lego instructions step by step. This book is different than lego instructions so he hasn't taken to it yet. For example, this book will give you ideas about how to orient a motor (with specific pieces) to make a creation do something. There is really no step by step building process as in Lego instructions. There are pictures of a creation, at various stages of being built and can sometimes be hard to see how something is put together. As he grows out of the step by step style of building Lego creations, this book will be more useful. Also, you can ONLY recreate what is in the book if you have the same pieces. Unfortunately, because we only have a relatively few number of Lego Technic pieces and motors, we cannot build most of the examples in this book. (We're in the process of buying more pieces.) For example, the motor we have is bigger than the one used throughout most of the book so we cannot build most of the books creations without buying the smaller motor. I think that as my sons collection of Technic grows, this book will become more useful.Overall I think this is a good book, but it requires a different way of thinking about how to build something. Also having most of the pieces and motors (that author uses in this book) is kind of a requirement so that you can build what you see. Hope this helps!
This is a terrific book. The author is a genius coming up with imaginative use of Technics andLego parts to make pieces come alive with motion.But....even though there is a link given in the book for what parts are needed the list is not specific at all. For example I tried to assemble a Technic wheel and attach it to a frame. I could not figure out what the join piece should be. The list doesn't say which one to use and Lego itself gives no clue which pieces turn upon joining and which pieces are static (non-turning). That's kinda important don't you think? The join piece I used would not allow the wheel to turn.If a parts list were available online this book would be a 10!Right now it is a big challenge and I'm not the one supposed to be challenged, the kids are.If anyone can direct me to a User group that has listed specific parts needed for each page PLEASE email or post the address here.I would be eternally grateful. My project has a deadline and I will probably abandon this if I can't get a parts list itime.
Excellent, excellent book for my budding Lego engineer. He's 8 and beginning to explore Technics. He loves the fact that there are no words - just simple, easy-to-use instructions. I bought all 3 books and am saving the other two for Christmas. Unlike the brickmaker's own products that purport to teach building techniques, the author shows - over and over and over - the concept of gears and combining them to make vehicles that actually work. It's the repetition that's key, and the idea that once a builder gets it - he or she can move on in the book, and continue learning new configurations. A must-have book for any builder!
My eight year old son received this for Christmas and has been flipping through it and building ever since. The pictures don't give a step by step, but set up the shots so you can get a clear idea of what needs to be used. Building like this is a little more difficult that the easy instructions in the box, but if you're an advanced enough Lego builder to have the Technic series, then these books are simple enough to understand, and even build off of.
This is a great book for mechanically inclined kids who have a LEGO collection and love to build.
Good for the kids. The pictures make it unnecessary for them to read.
The photos shown in the book are nicely done. My grandson was interested in building Legos that incorporate motors. Using Ebay I purchased the necessary parts shown in the photos. He and I spend many hours duplicating the ideas found in this book. It has even led to development of his own ideas. Too bad Lego decided to move away from "Technic"
I purchased these books to help with a robotics club at a local middle school (grades 6 - 8). They had participated in the FIRST Lego League and these books will help them adapt and create useful robots for future competitions. The books provide detailed views of the various vehicles and they are easy for the students to create and modify. This is well worth the price.
