Improbable Planet: How Earth Became Humanity's Home, by Hugh Ross

From the Inside Flap

Are we really just the result of innumerable coincidences? Or is there a more reasonable explanation? Most of us remember the basics from science classes about how Earth came to be the only known planet that sustains complex life. But what most people don't know is that the more thoroughly researchers investigate the history of our planet, the more astonishing the story of our existence becomes. The number and complexity of the astronomical, geological, chemical, and biological features recognized as essential to human existence have expanded explosively within the past decade. An understanding of what is required to make possible a large human population and advanced civilizations has raised profound questions about life, our purpose, and our destiny. This fascinating book helps nonscientists understand the countless miracles that undergird the exquisitely fine-tuned planet we call home--as if Someone had us in mind all along.|Hugh Ross (PhD, University of Toronto) is founder and president of Reasons to Believe (www.reasons.org). He is the author of many books, including More Than a Theory and Why the Universe Is the Way It Is. An astronomer and a member of the pastoral staff of a church near Caltech, Ross has addressed students and faculty on over three hundred campuses in the United States and abroad on a wide variety of science-faith topics. From science conferences to churches to government and private research labs, Ross presents powerful evidence for a purpose-filled universe. He lives in the Los Angeles area.

From the Back Cover

"With his typical clarity, insight, and precision, Ross shows how recent scientific findings undermine naturalism while simultaneously providing evidence that there is a plan, purpose, and design in the universe."--Sean McDowell, professor, Biola University; bestselling author of over fifteen books, including A New Kind of Apologist"In Improbable Planet, Ross holds readers' hands, leading them in a readable yet gently technical format through a compelling layer-upon-layer argument for the distinctiveness of the planet on which we live and of the preparation for inimitable life on Earth. The text is replete with references from primary scientific articles in some of the most well-respected journals, underscoring the highest academic rigor taken in substantiating the factual claims. Only the shamefully flippant could dismiss this book as being a faith-filled presentation rather than the scholarly work it represents."--James M. Tour, T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, Rice University; R&D magazine's 2013 Scientist of the Year"Hugh Ross brilliantly silences those who would claim that this Earth, this solar system, this galaxy, and this universe are nothing but a mere accident. Improbable Planet is technical yet poetic; thoroughly scientific yet faith-inspiring. I commend it to anyone who seriously contemplates the wonder of this planet we call Earth."--Pat Robertson, founder/chairman, The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc."Hugh Ross takes us on a riveting tour of the scientific story, from the beginning of the cosmos to present humankind. He shows how that story pushes us toward the conclusion that purpose has driven the whole story, with the different pieces intertwined and each supporting the production of an ideal habitat for human beings right here and right now. Not only will this commend Christian faith to scientifically minded inquirers, but it will also strengthen the confidence of believers that we inhabit and participate in a meaningful and purposeful story."--C. John "Jack" Collins, professor of Old Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary"With thorough notations and research, Hugh Ross takes us on a journey through time and space to bring us firmly back to our own planet, formed by one Creator. For those who need a scientific explanation of our universe and the life-forms within it, you will be satisfied. For those who already believe that God's divine hand created the world and all life within, you will be validated. Hugh Ross writes to stretch our intellect and to strengthen our faith. Improbable Planet does the improbable--demonstrates that the language of science does not threaten but instead augments the prose of evangelism."--Ed Young, senior pastor, Second Baptist Church, Houston, TX

This book should be carefully studied by atheists, skeptics, and people of faith, including Christians. It includes almost 40 pages of citations delineated in a sequential, logical way that shows, with each chapter building on the chapter before, how Earth's development happened. The relevance of this book is that it offers clear answers to felt macro-questions:* What does Earth's history reveal about the value of human life, including my life?* If human life is so valuable, then why are billions of people living in miserable conditions?* What do the ongoing massive changes in Earth's conditions suggest about the future of Earth and the future of humanity?* Why does human life need such a massive universe in which 50 billion trillion stars comprise only 1% of its total mass?Using the scholarly research of world-renowned scientists and refereed academic journals,Hugh Ross presents an elaborate set of scientific facts garnered from several different scientific disciplines (astrophysics, biophysics, chemistry, geology, biology). His main contribution is to synthesize those facts, authenticate them with Scripture, and then show the general public (along with academic elites) what scientific truth reveals: that Earth was specially made for people and also specially made to accommodate human redemption. In other words, the history of Earth reveals its miraculous inception (creation) and its space-time capacity for being the venue for the miracle of redemption. Here are some key lines from the book (in quotes) which may or may not be followed by explanatory comments from me:* Earth is . . . a planet with a very long history of life, a history that led to the appearance of human beings. We are not constrained to a low population in a few restricted areas. Humans currently occupy all of Earth's landmasses. We have multiplied to a population exceeding 7 billion individuals, and have achieved a high-level technology that continues to advance on a global scale. All these features of current human existence and civilization would be impossible unless life originated on Earth as early as physically possible." (p. 93)* The anthropic principle has become the prebiotic principle" (p.21). In other words, whereas naturalistic scientists have long claimed that humanity's existence places severe constraints on the Milky Way Galaxy, the solar system, and Earth, scientist Marcelo Gleiser (Brazilian Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College) has said that what was formally seen as constraints is now understood to be nothing more than "the preconditions for primitive life.* What would be easier to take for granted than dirt? However basic is may seem, the ubiquity of dirt represents no small coincidence. The complex story traces back to . . . "Hugh Ross explains the history of dirt, mountains, oceans, the moon, and more. That's why I have long stated that Hugh Ross, Ph.D. is my favorite worship leader. All these many facts vividly declare the glory of God.I highly recommend this book and hope it is used as required reading in classrooms all over the world. We are certainly going to use it in our graduate levels courses in Right On Mission. See rightonmission.org.No one asked me to write this book review; I did so freely of my own volition without being remunerated.

As a person who has studied many of the sciences for over 50 years and who became a Christian 14 months ago, I found this book to be a genuine treasure. It should be made into a movie. Although it can be fairly technical sometimes, even a layman can grasp most of the concepts. Having it laid out visually with a good narrator could make it available to a much wider audience. Having said that, I do highly recommend getting this book and working your way through it. It will be well worth your time and effort.

I am neither a scientist nor a theologian, but I loved this book. I've always subscribed to the seven literal (i.e., 24 hour) days of creation. This book opened myeyes to the intricate eeons of careful preparation measured in "God days", possibly billions of years. Some of the technical terms were a little above my head; however, the concepts were eventually explained in terms simple enough even for me. The great mass of improbably tight tolerances required to support life as we know it left me filled with awe. In the end,, the point is not how long it took God to create this earth but that He invested so much to make it what it is. Wow. Definitely worth reading.

My neurosurgeon, Stan Rouhe, gave an interview to a couple of his friends in the final days of his life as he accepted the fact that his current battle with pancreatic cancer was leading to his physical death. He did not fear death because he said he knew that God's existence was a FACT! He said that he arrived at that conclusion after he read a book by Hugh Ross that his daughter had given him. His friends posted their interview online enabling his friends to share his last thoughts and spiritual growth during his last days on Earth. I asked myself what kind of scientific proof could have convinced my friend and doctor of 40 years to make such a bold statement as "God's existence is a FACT." I went straight to Amazon and ordered this book on my kindle so that I, too, could have su ch scientific certainty of God's existence.I did not expect to be convinced. I expected to still have to depend on faith. That was not the case. I finished the book with a sense of absolute knowledge. The scientific information is arranged as an analogy of building a complex structure. It shows how complex the process was to create a planet capable of supporting advanced forms of life was. The planet had to revolve around a star of a particular size and mass, a particular distance away, with a particular age, luminosity, and radiation. Elements had to be created in specific amounts and concentrations at exactly the right times. Different forms of life had to be created and extinguished at exact times to create heavy metals and fossil fuels for future use. Ice ages had to appear at particular predictable intervals, and continents had to drift, collide, and lift mountains and plateaus like the one in Tibet. There had to be a particular amount of water and a specific amount of land. Certain forms of life needed to appear at certain times to control temperature and form soil . No other planet located in the Milky Way comes even close to meeting these requirements. Complex forms of life dependent upon each other suddenly appeared sooner than could be formed by evolution.I went on the internet to find my long-term friend and doctor--only to find my friend is gone from this world and to be given the same scientific proof of God's existence that he found before his passing. The scientific case for God appears to be stronger in this book than it is in the Bible. The book is a wonderful, parting gift.

I had 2 courses of astronomy in college and could only read a few pages at a time. It is complex maybe because I didn't take physics in college. I did comprehend it and found it very informative. He sticks to the sciences of the planet and galaxy with a super intelligent designer in mind. The religious portion doesn't show up until the last chapter. He definitely knows what he writes in explaining how lucky we are to have a planet to live on. It made me appreciate Earth more. It is not a simple read. It is written for people interested in astronomy and/or astrophysics.

In space, no one can hear you grep.

If you've ever parsed a logfile and enjoy hard science fiction, then SYSLOG is for you!

In all the years of interstellar exploration, lifeforms no more complex than invertebrates have ever been found. Until now.

Almost 9,000 light years from Earth, the SS Orca colony surveying ship has been in orbit around a candidate colony planet for over a year with its family crew of Dr. Marcus Rapan, his wife, Becky, son, Dan, and a quantum artificial intelligence computer, CRTR, otherwise known as Critter.

So far it's been a routine colony certification, but Dr. Rapan has uncovered something amazing on the planet below - tantalizing fossils that will re-write the history books and inflate his first settler's bonus. But before he can report his findings, his research is interrupted and his family is torn away from him.

As told via the ship's logs, SYSLOG I is the first episode in a saga that spans the parsecs.

From the Author
SYSLOG was birthed on a collaborative writing website, One Million Monkeys Typing, where I added to a story that was told in journal format. I explored a few threads of what the humans might be experiencing before I took a stab at what the AI directing the ship was experiencing.

Having spent a good chunk of my professional career eyeballs deep digging through syslogs looking for the signal in the noise, I know that these logs tell stories ranging from the sublime to the hilarious to the downright terrifying. If you've ever tracked down an elusive bug, found one of your own silly configuration errors, or cleaned up after a system intrusion, you know what I'm talking about.

While the plot was clear in my mind, elevating a logfile to a central character and have it tell a (hopefully) coherent story was a special challenge. I had to invent my own command set, keep track of process IDs, and ponder what an AI would log. My hope is that attuned readers will find the logs realistic and non-techie people find the syslog portions accessible and understandable.

About the Author
An ex-chemistry major with a degree in political science, Chris stumbled into a computing career and eventually founded an Internet data center services firm, digital.forest. While there, he oversaw the BGP network, system administered every operating system you'd expect to find running websites, and was technical support of last resort for customers. The countless hours he spent grepping logfiles to tease out sendmail ruleset errors, bind typos, and myriad other arcana for the proper operation of the equipment under his charge left him with the reflexive query of, "Have you checked the logs?" to just about any technical question posed to him.

Chris' first short story won accolades from his mother and grade school teacher for his riveting tale about an Amazonian explorer being consumed by an anaconda. His SYSLOG short story series does not include an anaconda, but it is a similar story of exploration and an examination of how the human condition intersects with the technology that carries us simultaneously to wondrous idylls and dangers.

Chris is a Pacific Northwest native that lives in the Seattle area with his family and tropical fish.
